Thanks to South Ark370Z for actually sending useful information.
Here is the final story: The body shop found far more damage than was obvious. While the headlights looked OK, apparently some tabs were broken underneath on one. In addition to the hood and nose, they also replaced the radiator, condenser and a bunch of fittings and brackets. They did excellent work and painted not only the new parts but blended in the fenders, which I thought was unnecessary. However, now there are no stone chips at all. The car looks great and we'll probably keep it another five years.
Apparently, the insurance company had no problem with the body shop raising the estimate from $4500 to $5600 so I guess that's the going rate. We are real happy that we didn't have to pay for it.
