Programs that send emails automatically to either employees or to the outside world would initially send the mail through specific servers that would relay the mail accordingly. It's a very old school approach before "the cloud" was invented. I have since figured out how to route those automated emails directly to the cloud and effectively eliminating a lot of useless junk in the middle. Mail goes through quicker, cleaner and with less hickups now.
