Well, first off, most of the statistics are useless without a detailed understanding of the included and excluded information, as you mention. The media is excellent at finding numbers that meet their needs and using them to promote false narratives.
If the experts are correct and we don't have a vaccine before then, we could be looking at 2/3 of the population with some form of covid before humans overcome the virus (i.e. presence of antibodies in enough of the population). That's like 200M+ people in the US alone and 4+ BILLION people in the world (although I'm guessing we'll never see case numbers like that due to lack of testing). If the mortality rate reaches 1% at those numbers, that's over 2M people in the US that'll die and 40M in the world
