My dad (in Hong Kong) echos your experience.
During her college senior year in USA, my younger sister had a BF that's from mainland China. Along the way, gotten to know many mid 20's from mainland China. Experience is similar....they can hehe haha with you, talk about anything, but as soon as you try to start a discussion that even probe into the propaganda of the Chinese Government, their politics, freedom, they would shut my sister down, or something along the line of "there's nothing wrong with xxxx".
No Chinese Nationals would risk saying anything on FB, certainly not with any information that can link back to his/her real identity. FB is prohibited in China anyway, one actually has to hack his/her way out.
Social media in China is monitored by its government.
