I was 15 in 1985 when I got a new Fiero GT. It was silver and I only had a learner's permit. I paid my dad $149 per month, which covered the note. My parents paid my insurance. I had to delay getting my license for 6 months (but still paid the note) after I turned 16 because of an unfortunate WOT incident when I sneaked the car out.

- 1986 Honda Civic -- had to pay for it, rent and college. Had to give up the Fiero.

- 1988 Suzuki Samurai -- couldn't afford much, but HAD to have fun again. I think I paid something like 14% interest on the loan.

- 1990 Toyota Tercel -- wrecked the Samurai (not my fault) and needed a practical commuter car.

- 1992 Ford Explorer Sport -- needed an SUV for work. Understood for the first time that the term "Sport" is relative.

- 1996 Mazda MX-6 -- Got my first job in advertising and a car to match. Leather interior, V6. I loved that car.

- 2000 BMW MZ3 -- Newly divorced and working in a new job in a new city, I actually took delivery of the car on my ex-wife's birthday.

- 2001 BMW 330Cic -- Slightly used, but perfect in every way. It had the M sport package NO Premium PKG (stainless, instead of wood trim) was black on black and cost a fortune. My right brain loved that car. My left brain hated it.

- 2002 Honda Civic -- I quit my job to start my own agency and needed to economize.

- 2005 Honda Accord -- advertising business in full free-fall, start-up agency deemed an ego-maniacal miscalculation. Went into real estate and needed a car with leather interior and auto transmission for carting clients around. Hated it.

- 2006 Mazda MX-5 -- Got the first of the NC models. Found it to be a flawless car. I was trying to recapture my MZ3 feeling. I actually liked the Miata better. 30 more HP would make an MX-5 the perfect car, I think. I began making plans to buy a Mazdaspeed Miata as soon as it came out. It never did. I was always conscious of driving a prom queen's car, but those who know it, know it is anything but. It is nimble, tossable and fits like a glove. A great sports car.

- 2010 370Z Roadster -- Made VP at my agency and needed a more grown-up ride. However, roadsters were in my blood. Narrowed my choices down to three cars -- a 335 convertible (not really a roadster) a Z4 (a little soft and WAY overpriced) or the Z. All things being equal I would have chosen the Z anyway. It is perfect. I've wanted one since I was in high school. This one was worth the wait. I am loving it in every way.
