I'm not sure the units labeled as being for camping would be big enough for what I want. If things get bad enough that I'm pulling water from the ditch, I'm probably going to be supplying water to other people.
The Lifestraw Community in all-metal construction would be what I'm imagining I need/want. But metal may be going a little overboard; plastic might be OK. I'll definitely be investigating the LC further.
I've also been looking at stills. A pressure cooker and some copper tubing would work and be easy to put together in an emergency but would use a lot of valuable fuel.
A solar still wouldn't need any fuel but it looks like a unit to supply 6 -12 people would be too large to be practical unless the installation were permanent.
I may need to scale back on the specs and go for something just big enough for the dogs and I.

A solar set up large enough to supply 120v through an inverter and batteries is a permanent set up on your roof.
For stills. Check out Mile High Stills. Have a friend that has the stainless still with a thumper.
I almost bought one for myself.
