This is obvious to a lot of people but some just don't get it: The time to plan for a catastrophe is before it happens. You can't plan for everything but a good supply of water, food, heat, and light will get you through most emergencies. You don't have to become a SHTF prepper, just enough to get you and your family through the aftermath of tornadoes, ice storms, quakes, etc. Depending on how bad you think things can get, you might want to keep a few guns and some ammo, too. If you have trees around your house, a chain saw and fuel could come in handy to remove them from your house and/or cut firewood for heat.
