On the 7ATs I've driven (assume its the same in the US as the UK), we have two modes as above, but also in full auto, you can use the paddles to override and shift up and down, but if then the car thinks you need to shift up/down later it will automatically take over again. In manual mode it leaves the shifting to you even if you batter it off the rev limiter or go so low you stall
I think this was the same as the G37S I drove too, although I didnt go through any real testing with both cars, just what I saw test driving them. Still only 2 modes, stick one way and it was in D and there it was M (with +/- going foward and backwards with the stick)
