I worked at a plant where, when I first went to work there, we would repair instruments/controllers/etc at the component/chip level. Some bean counter decided it was cheaper to send them off for repair rather than pay a tech to troubleshoot and keep parts in stock. We ended up replacing entire units instead of replacing components or boards. Too bad because chip-shooting was valuable experience for new techs fresh out of school - ya gotta know how it works before you can chip-shoot.
