We had another thread recently (among other similar threads) on this. Yes, it probably will rub onlookers as a wannabe manual look, but the stock look is hideous. Nissan was clearly capable of a nicer trim like the G37's, which actually uses a boot. Look at the C6 automatic, that uses a boot too. However, key thing is that the trim also looks decent.

Yes, Nissan was probably confined to reusing the surrounding ring, and generally had to be economical, but it could not have been impossible to design anything better. They didn't even bother to smooth the transition from shift knob to gate with even a minor sleeve here. Bare stick showing in between.
