I really do not know and going off the cuff here. Looking at the diagram on K&N website:
K&N Oil Filters - Oil Filters for Cars, Trucks, Motorcycles, ATV's, Boats, and more! I can only imagine the spring is placing pressure on the filter which seats up against the anti drainback valve and it’s here where the spring comes into play by keeping a constant tight seal between the filter and anti drainback valve.
K&N’s definition of their anti drainback valve.
Anti-drainback valve (where applicable) eliminates dry starts,
prevents oil from draining back into crankcase during engine shutdown
