It is easier to diffuse the situation without escalating it. Which is always the preferred option. I'll take a punch before throwing one. Self-defense is much easier to justify in court vs assault. Just cause the guy can't take a punch and got dropped doesn't mean I didn't act in self-defense.

There's too many stupid people here in Kansas/Missery to not carry. Between the meth users and the 'mental' cases (aka lady in Parkville that fired two shots in the DMV parking lot), sometimes the mere presence of a firearm gives people pause.
I honked at a guy for almost taking the front bumper off of my old Malibu. He got out of his truck at the stop light with a tire iron. I displayed a .45, he turned around, got back in his truck and left. He'd have made a helluva mess of me because we were in a left turn lane on a bridge.
