AM to AM-FM was the most awesome jump for me. As a teen I was amazed at how you no longer lost the music on the radio going under overpasses or through tunnels and how there was no longer static when you drove beneath power lines. Waiting for "good" FM stations to come to my area was agonizingly slow.
All the "good" AM stations in my area either signed off around sundown or their reception weakened miserably. Having to depend upon good weather to get WLS in Chicago at night usually turned out well enough though.
Somehow I missed 4-tracks, but I went through the rest of the progression.
