Wages go up with low unemployment. Companies have to pay higher to attract and keep workers. High unemployment. Companies don't have to much to keep and attract workers.
As for moving up in a company. Seen this too many times. Being in the right place, with the right people, saying the right thing, at the right time. Seen the wrong people move up that should never been moved.
