Going by what I have read over the years, there can be a reverse flow pulse (IIRC, when the exhaust valve closes and the gasses cool quickly) - so it
may be possible that the dust slowly migrates upstream.
But, yeah, it does sound a bit far-fetched to me, too. The outgoing pulse is a LOT bigger. Plus I read that a long time ago and my memory ain't what it used to be.
I've seen a lot of weird things in my life, this may be another one.
