The receiver will handle a set of new speakers but in the long run you would get better quality with an amp hooked up. Just check it out with the head unit first and if you want more add an amp. My eclipse CD3200 worked great with the JL VR series component set but when I added the sub I said "what the hell" and went ahead and put them on the amp too. They do sound a lot better but if I didn't put an amp on them the bass would've drowned them out.
