yea when doing a setup shot like this i used to as well, till i figured out how to use AF properly (which AF mode to be in that is). as long as you have enough light for the AF processor to find contrast to lock in on, it will be spot on if you have a good lens. sometimes a lens can be a little "off" or soft if not calibrated correctly, especially if it's been dropped. my L-glass lenses are crisp so therefore i never use manual focus usually.
