I feel like Apple has been trying to shove slate computers down our throats for years now. Nobody seems to remember the Newton? There's a reason for that - it sucked.
Everyone ask yourself this: tablets have been around forever now, in one way, shape or form. Can you honestly remember anyone who actually used one REGULARLY? Like, actually enjoyed walking around with a silly tablet taking notes and crap.
Apple has felt there's a void to be filled for this device for a long time. They finally found a way to make it remotely interesting to the hipsters who will show up in droves to buy one: if the iPod and iPhone were so successful...why not just make one thats huge and looks identical? It even runs the same apps! So...wait, what makes it so much different than an iPhone? Uhmmmm....its.....bigger? And uhhh.....you can.....uhhhh........ITS MAGICAL! STEVE JOBS SAID SO!
