Range is somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 foot, line of sight. IIRC, the Owner's Manual has some figures.

I still think there is a very good chance that the starting problem is a clutch (6MT) or brake (7AT) pedal switch.
The only caveat to this though, if it was say a 6MT, the indicator display (foot/clutch) would pop up telling you to press the clutch to start the car.. and thats not showing up.. (I literally just dealt with this, this past weekend, finally fixing my cruise control, having to adjust the upper sensor on the clutch pedal)

If his Z is an automatic, the foot/brake would show, and thats not showing either. So I dont think it could be a sensor on one of his pedals.
