My wife had an old Hyundai Pony (probably same vintage as some members here!). I think she ran it to 160 or 180,000 Km. That thing was a tank, and easy to fix if it ever needed. Only took gas, oil (which it did consume a bit of), tires and brakes. I think I replaced a speedometer cable once.

I wouldn't be scared to buy another - just not for performance driving. As a daily, for the price and with the warranty they offer (and, frankly, the fit an finish is not half bad), it doesn't seem like all that terrible a proposition.
