Don't know about the SHO, but Honda's 1966 600s sports car had chain drive rear wheels. Of course they were primarily a motorcycle producer up to that point.
I think hybrid drive trains are just a transition to all electric cars. Doesn't make much sense to have both an ICE and electric motor system in a car in the future. In the latest MT magazine, there is an article on the latest Lambo show car at the Tokyo Auto Show, the Terzo Millennio Concept, "with four wheel mounted electric motors fed NOT BY BATTERIES, but by supercapacitors which can discharge and absorb large amounts of electricity much faster than batteries." Apparently it is being developed in conjunction with MIT. I think the "battery problem" will be resolved with this kind of technology.
