The car warms up easier/quicker when its driving so i try to find a good balance depending on the situation.

Modern Vehicle: slightly warm up the car so the RPM's aren't too high, should only take 1-2 minutes, if its extremely cold give it another minute, then drive the car and don't abuse it until its reached sufficient operating temperatures.

Older Vehicle: let it idle warming up a little longer then you would with a modern car
