There is a fair bit of nationalism that comes along with Formula 1, and in sports in general.

You finding it surprising Schumacher would drive for Mercedes was my reasoning for stating the "obvious". Blissfully undermining the fact he already had a history with Mercedes, the mark being a key proponent behind him even racing in F1.

Ferrari being the most nationalistic of them all. Favoring and supporting Italian drivers whenever they possibly can. Even considering the use of Rossi at some point in time (although just highly speculated rumors) over several veteran and skilled F1 drivers for the sake of having an Italian driver in a Italian car. The majority of their staff and engineers being Italian even in the face of several others countries wanting to be apart of the team. James Allison even hinted at the problems behind Ferrari's nationalistic tyranny.
