Hey guys I have a 2011 Nismo with 9000 miles on it and I just checked the oil level and it is smack dead in the middle between full and low. My concern is that when I did an oil change, I filled it up to the full dot. Now It is in the middle. Is this normal? I put in a tad more than 5 qts. Like 5.15 qts. Any feedback would be awesome! Thanks guys!

That does sound excessive. I believe the TBS test states >10mm oil loss on dip stick after 1000-1350 miles is a fail.
Check the TBS, that will give you the answer.

The thing is I put 5.15 qts of oil in there. Shouldn't it be in the middle or near the full dot? When I checked the oil level after my oil change it was at the full dot. But I put the recommended amount of oil which should make it in the middle I guess? Thanks again.

Nissan bought back my 2006 350Z for oil consumption after second engine failed. The put me in 2009 370Z which started showing signs of oil consumption after 5000 miles. Complained the car was showing the same signs as 2006 and was told that was normal. Keep a close eye on it and recorded low oil at every service. Bottom line engine was replaced after 20000 miles.

Third time is a charm! Sux though, I was one of the first to have 06 Z33 engine replaced and moderated the humongus thread on my350z...aka ZeeForce until 09 Z34's came out. Sold both Z33's and have had great luck with two 2009 Z34's. 44k and no oil consumption. What I learned from the experience and now educated in oil analysis is how the car was broken in and what oil is being used, along with some other treatments recommended by guru Terry Dyson of dysonanalysis.
Tip: a used oil analysis is your best friend. And I am not talking about blackstone, because unless you are educated in what the numbers mean, you need an expert to translate and work for a solution, not someting you can get from a blackstone report. g/l with third engine. |

I just checked my oil and I have 3/4 oil on the dipstick and it has only been 1200 miles since my last oil change. Am I consuming too much oil? Thanks guys!

The low down on my choice of oil and extra goodies not disclosed
A collection of personal experience on oil consumption, used oil analysis and resources for tuning your engine against wear. Might be a rehash and just another oil consumption thread post. Some might find the info interesting if so then my time writing it up did not go wasted.
Enjoy - Curtis The following was posted in another thread to a response to another member and after writing a freakin novel thought it would be better suited here. Repost from thread: DIY: Nissan 370Z Oil change (AK370Z way) Pictures inside Each car will perform different with different results after a oil analysis with many factors to consider, like geographic location in the USA i.e. if your area is in a very dusty high winds and lots of flat rural land to stir up sand and such. Driving habits, non driving habits like if your commute is so short the oil does not get up to operating normal operating temps like me, commute is 3.5 miles one way, but I make up for on the weekends. Still the condensation that builds up and does not burn off during the short commute. How the engine was originally broken in and what type of oil was used during break in and now during long term use. How often the air filter is cleaned and replaced. How the oil withstands the interval and if it deteoriates or breaks down before the 3750 mile oil changel, to name just a few. Terry Dyson does a full out ADVANCED oil analysis that puts BlackStone (BS) to shame. BlackStone is good, but does not perform the additional tests and Terry provides an mpeg audio file commentary on the tests results and suggestions and definitions of all included in the data from a used oil analysis (UOA) test report. If you know and are educated in reading more in the data that BS provides then you can save money and just go with BS. I have always spent the extra $$ and its well worth it. I can email back and forth for more explanations and trial and error between UOA's. Terry also has additonal recommendations and most important the price includes his assistance in tuning the engine that I cannot go into as that would be taking away from his services, plus each car is different even though make and model are identical. They were not built the same and the metalology within the interanl parts used can differ and wear differently. It's highly unlikely that two Z's with the same oil and such would produce identical UOA's. The situation can be duplicated but alot of conditions have to be the same. I was one of the first to have a large block engine approved for replacement by Nissan North America (NNA) with my brothers 2006 350Z RevUp engine. During the oil consumption days I started using Terry Dyson and especially after the engine swap he provided alot of break in procedures, pretty well known but some are controversial practices on breakin. In a nutshell alot of RevUp owners went thru two and three engine swaps and some had buybacks from NNA. Mine was good, not perfect, and it turned out like initially discussed on the humungious thread on my350Z which I maintained the opening thread after the original poster sold his Z and went back to Honda S2K. He gave me his password to specifically update the opening post with updates from NNA. I have not updated it since 2009. Terry Dyson helped me with the breakin and other Terry secrets for maintaining a non oil consuming engine. After about 1 year I stopped using his service, price increase and most important my UOA's were stablized with good numbers. I will from time to time send in a UOA sample to keep in check on the wear and especially to see if he has new products or has switch recommended oil. He has been using this brand for many years and still recommends it. But there are other secret mixes of fuel additives that have proven successful in a clean burning engine that he switches up from time to time. It's probably the only reason I would toss him a sample UOA. Or if I see a dramatic oil consumption. With 44k miles on both 370Z's the bros has 2mm oil consumption on recommended with this oil of 5k oil change interval. So with the increased cost (more than Nissan's esther oil, plus freight factored in) it runs about IRC (about $15-17 per quart) and the oil change interval can be pushed out to 5k miles. I am changing both Z's at same time so I get a break by buying in gallon jugs. The fuel treatment runs me about $115 but that last me on both cars about 1.5 years with every fill up, both cars remember. Single car would last about 3 years. All in all I spend alot on oil BUT it has proven to be worth every penney. IMO... There is a very informative thread over on my350z forum on oil education by member (Resolute), the link to the thread is below. I did use Mobil 1 on both 350Z's with decent results and after a few UOA's I switched to over the counter Penzoil Platinum Plus I also used this during my intial 1250 mile breakin on the 370Z with a regimental oil change at 75 miles, 250, then 500 miles during the first 3750 miles on the car. Then switched over to Terry Dysons recommended oil. Another well know website forum is Bob is The Oil Guy......and there are probably several posts about Terry Dyson. He has since opened up his own forum discussion for premium yearly subscription members which come with two UOA's. I just went with the package that has the audio commentary on the UOA which I believe is now up to $150 for the Advanced UOA, that audio file alone is worth it's weight in gold. In additon he now offers for $79 (more in line with BlackStone) a RAW data UOA test results for your own interpretation. The guy knows his stuff and is well known through out the oil industry. Okay this went alot farther than I had intended so here is the oil I use. Dont laugh the stuff really works and most people say what...that's xxxx oil. But dont laugh I have been using it since 2006 on four Z's and it surpasses many off the shelf oil. Now there is still the german brand of Castrol that is hard to get which had great results on 350Z's. Remember each car is different as I outlined only some of the differences above. Resolute's thread on my350Z goes more into detail on the differences of engines. My oil consumption has been 8mm per oil change interval (OCI) of 5k miles. Pretty good, it's higher because I was rougher on the breakin and run higher revs than my brother's 370Z at 2mm per OCI. So here is the linky.....I use the 5w-40...again it's more than just the oil that keeps my engine strong and clean with low oil consumption and most important the wear on the metalology. Just got my car back today from having the short block replaced due to excessive oil consumption. Was dealing with a little over a quart per 1k miles- not exactly a small amount.
Car had bolt-ons. Dealer didn't give me any hassle. I went through this with my 350 and now with my 370. I think I've had enough of this merry go round, myself. |
