Makes sense to me. They ended up saying "we can't just replace parts that haven't shown signs of wear" so now it's outside of warranty just a ticking time bomb

You were not misinformed. Based on what I have learned on this forum, the VLSD inside the diff is a sealed unit..but the diff itself is serviceable.
