I happen to love the sounds of the Z motor throughout the entire rpm range. and if you plan on modding the car then I would advise against a Nismo.

and if you plan on modding the car then I would advise against a Nismo. They are terrific cars but you're paying for the suspension(that you'll probably upgrade), the exhaust(that you'll probably upgrade), and a body kit ...oh ya, the wheels are nice though. At least with a touring model you'll get heated leather seats and some other goodies. The BOSE is alright, keeps the weight down and sounds ok, not stellar. Possibly NAV if you choose that route, auto dimming mirror with garage door openers. In my personal opinion, somebody who mods their car would skip over the Nismo because you'll be paying for parts that won't be on the car long anyways.

It's actually not the motor that sounds hoarse, it's the crappy stock exhaust and muffled intake. I've heard some glorious sounding Zs. Don't let that put you off.

i got a chance to drive a members car today and i didnt find the engine noise to be unrefined. granted the motor was simply just loud but with a sweet sounding exhaust (he had a tanabe medallion), it should overpower it. the engine sounded very mechanical; not sure if thats a bad thing. i dont expect it to sound like a ferrari as it revs, maybe that's what the magazine editors meant by it?
but boy i miss the exhaust note on japanese 6cylinders (my last two cars have been v8's).

my experience...

On the unrefined sounds as the rpm climbs? I don't know about that.. I like the way my Z sounds but honestly it will never sound like my old 2008 M3. V8 Forced induction? I loved that sound!! But I have no regrets with going the 370z route. Overall I think it's a better looking car than the M3 and the cabin is like a cockpit! I have the one with the Navi and I love the look of it!! Again - nothing will sound like your M3.. But the 370z with the right exhaust will still sound sweet! Good luck!! Hope this helps from a fellow - ex-M3 owner.. |
