May I suggest you learn, its not hard at all though learning on a brand new Z kinda sucks. Might as well till you get it paid down some cause thats beyond high in price. Once its payed down some youll be driving it like a pro so just hang on to it and have fun! It will be worth it!

ThoriumHotdog 12-04-2010 01:41 PM

:iagree:

Learning to drive stick is definitely worth driving that ride. :) GLWS

djpathfinder 12-04-2010 02:13 PM

MakoFury, give it some time. Trust me, you'll love it once you get the hang of it. Years ago, my wife (then girlfriend) converted me to driving stick, so I know what you're going through.

MakoFury 12-05-2010 11:19 AM

I know...I like the car just hate driving/learning stick...it makes me not want to drive the car...getting honked at while stalling multiple times is not fun...

go to a parking lot. Practice starting over and over and over again. thats all it takes. then you'll be fine. I thikn you are getting especially frustrated b/c you are getting ahead of yourself. Driving stick in traffic, when you don't know how to drive stick, will make you never want to drive stick again. Trust me. Parking lot, practice away from other cars, then you won't feel pressured by other cars.

yeah but it's probably going to take a while for someone who is just starting to learn how to drive a manual transmission car to get good enough to enjoy driving it. therefore, i understand the OP's decision to sell the car.

Jeffblue 12-05-2010 12:11 PM

time=money. considering the OP will likely take at least a 6-7 thousand dollar loss selling the car, it would be worth the few hours it would take to at least get the basics down. the rest is just getting used to the car. theres plenty of people out there that drive stick that aren't very good at it. yea it takes a while to really be able to know the transmission really well and shift very precicesly, but it only takes a couple hours behind the wheel to get to the point where you are comfortable and not worried about stalling.

frost 12-05-2010 12:13 PM

Jesus, it took me like, a whopping hour to learn to drive stick. Don't be a puss.

Trips 12-05-2010 12:14 PM

Are you selling or asking for advice? If selling Post pics and glws, if advice? This is the wrong section for that.

Geez, one hour.

phelan 12-05-2010 12:15 PM

I echo sentiments, get the car to an empty parking lot, and practice, practice, practice. Unless you have 7-8 thousand dollars to just blow off when you sell at a loss, you really should just learn the manual transmission.

Out of curiosity, if you didn't know, and didn't want to learn, why did you buy a manual transmission...?

lets make phelans good point, and simplify it. if someone came up to you and offered to give you 7-8 thousand dollars to learn how to drive stick, would you? i'd be surprised if anyone answered 'no'. well, that's the exact situation you are in, just reversed. so yea... just think about it.

I admire the fact that you wanted to get this car in stick despite not knowing how to drive it at the time, but honestly, i was pretty much in your shoes, except i had a probably spent a total of 3 hours practicing and just driving around in another stick shift car over the month or so before getting my own Z.

yeah. my cousin drives a stick for years but whenever he shifts, his car would jerk violently. he just doesn't improve with time and experience. :)

MakoFury 12-05-2010 03:30 PM

Yeah..don't want to take that big of a hit, maybe max $1-2k but $6-7k wouldn't be worth it. I was doing well last week and then Friday just stalled like crazy..guess I just need more practice. Once I'm into 1st i'm fine, can shift smooth from 1-2...

i remember the first day i learned how to drive a stick shift car. my good buddy drove his car to a steep hill in san francisco, and told me to drive it.
it was a scary experience because if i failed, something bad would happen. Luckily, nothing bad happened. :)

Slightly modified for my point.

Funny as I feel completely the same way--about an Automatic! LOL

It wont take long, took me 50 miles to get used to driving around town and by 150, I was able to downshift and rev match :D I was terrible at driving stick when I first started out but it just clicked one day and I suddenly knew what I was doing. Don't give up or get discouraged! It is DEFINITELY worth it to stick it out. I will never own an automatic car again :)

I wish i had your car ):

i know what you mean. You are all like 'oh cool i'm getting it!' then you stall out and you are like

i'm glad to see you coming around to the idea of sticking with it. you will be very happy in the long run. don't worry stalling it either. despite what other people say, its really not that bad for your car, as long as its not something you do all the time, consistently throughout the ownership of the vehicle.

another thing you can practice is getting comfortable with the engagement point without any gas. With the car on a flat surface, let the clutch out slowly until you see the rpms dip a tiny bit. you will see the tach needle go down about 100 rpm and you will hear the engine speed go down. that is the engagement point. as son as this happens, just clutch all the way down. and try again. This will help you really get a feel for the clutch.

yeah i am like you, i would never buy an automatic car :)

my last car was a 2005 mercedes c320 sports sedan and i wanted a manual. the salesman said they did not make c320 (6-cylinders) with a manual, they only made c230 (4-cylinders) with a manual but he said he would check with the factory and get back to me. factory told him no problem and it took about a month for them to build it and ship it to the US. i traded it in for the nismo.

whoever has that car now has a pretty rare car :)

when i wrote that it would take a while for a person to become good enough to enjoy driving a mt, i was thinking about having the ability to drive at speeds just as good as another person with an AT 370z (because that's why we buy sports cars). That can take years but if the objective is just to drive a mt smoothly, that should not take too much time.

are you superstitious?

My car is number #4 and #4 in Japanese and chinese sound like death.
I am scared to drive the car after i found this out because i am somewhat superstitious
so my car is not that desirable :)

NCSUPACK09 12-12-2010 08:30 PM

Since I am not riding with you, I don't know what exactly is giving you problems getting started, but with most people they want to let out the clutch really quickly and get going. You want to get to the engagement point and hold it there until the RPMs start rising again. Once they start to rise, let off the clutch and go.

Its really not too difficult, but requires practice to get to the engagement spot quickly and making sure you hold the clutch at the engagement point even if you are rolling backwards for a second ;)

Lemers 12-13-2010 08:53 AM

If topgear can teach a blind man in one afternoon to drive a stick then you can learn too. Just stick with it.

Kenny 12-25-2010 05:20 PM

Learning to drive stick was one of the most fun driving experiences I ever had.

I was 17 with a bunch of my friends when I bought my first used Integra.

I must've stalled over 20 times in the course of driving it home. Thankfully I chose to pick it up in the late evening when traffic in my area was light. It only took me an hour to learn how to operate the vehicle. After that, it was all practice.

Do it.

You won't regret it.

However, there comes a point in a person's life when they just want to enjoy the drive and not have to worry about changing gears. Then by all means, get the auto. But for me as a driver, I want to feel engaged with the car and a manual is the only way that can happen.

Vigilans 12-29-2010 12:38 PM

Are you still selling your baby or are you now convinced to try stick handling it again? I might be interested in your car.

S

MakoFury 12-29-2010 12:41 PM

Hey Viligans-

I'm still on the fence. I've learned to drive the car quite well and haven't stalled in weeks. I'd be open to hearing offers on the car, it really just depends on how big of a hit i'd take on the car, anything more than $2-3k and I'm better off keeping it.

Thanks.

Vigilans 12-29-2010 02:13 PM

Happy to hear you were able to improve your handling skills :)

I'm not in a hurry to purchase and I am willing to wait until this coming summer to see what type of deals will be made available once people start switching their cars for the 2012 model. But I will keep you on my list of potential sellers.

Cheers!

neveucd 12-30-2010 02:47 PM

You can't just trade it at the dealership, or are they going to rip you off? I mean it is a 2011, is it really a $7k hit once you drive it off the lot?

tsolin01 12-30-2010 02:48 PM

Yea you're better off keeping it. I'm pretty sure you're gonna take more than a 2-3k hit on it. Most people can probably find a new one for less than 39,500.

Vigilans 12-31-2010 09:56 AM

I'm serious about acquiring a Z but I'll be patient and see if the anymore come available within the next 4-5 months. I'll be importing to Canada once I move back in December 11.

MakoFury 01-03-2011 12:45 PM

price update bump

k20z3 01-03-2011 01:57 PM

I got a 5 speed manual celica for my first car, and my dad said go learn, I bought the car but I asked people and I perfected it within a couple of weeks.
