Correct.
To change maps you use the cruise control buttons:

Hold down set and press cancel for the number of map you want, then release it. Note the light on the dash blinks the number of times of the map you set.
As long as the cruise light blinks in that manner it verifies that there is a tune on there. You just won't know what kind of tune it is. Typically your main tuned performance map is set as #1 so I would just make sure you go back to that map when you're done. There may be various rev/ speed limited maps, or an anti theft map in there (won't run).
A local Uprev tuner will tell you basically the same thing... No way to see how its tuned just from the software.
Since you have the cable and license you might consider retuning it (can be done remotely with datalogs for $150) so you can have everything set up how you want it and also the peace of mind.
Also you can add the ARC license upgrade ($100) for flat foot shifting, launch control, rolling anti lag, burnout mod.
