Bad connection to the sender is the only possible answer. If the oil is at capacity, then that's really all it can be. I'm making some presumptions here, that the engine was running before you added the TT... (j/k ) Butt splices or 'add a wire' splices are okay for stereo installs, but for engine splices, your best bet is solder & heat shrink. GL
