There's not but three basic reasons for a cat to fail: plugging, poisoning, and physical.
why do catalytic converters fail? With a SC, I suspect physical damage (eg, vibration) is high on the list of whys.

Yes. The lower the cell count, the lower the pressure drop (all else being equal).
