Time passes fast as you get older. Fact that your father and other male blood relatives all went around 75-85, many developing tough age related ailments (eyesight, wheelchair, etc.) , there is a sense of urgency. You see a bucket list and you throw out some you will never get to and others you do as quickly as possible so you can get to as many as possible.
With cars, sure I can put off buying another with the $5k, wait till I save more and in 5 years I can buy a vette or a Porsche but could I get in one at 75? Hell, I can't drive a stick shift anymore because of arthritic condition in my left leg.
You might understand better when a whole lot of folks your age start dying. This year, several musicians my age passed away, Walter Becker (google him) this week.
