He was driving on track for HPDE, which 95% of the insurance companies out there officially exclude. He would have to lie about where the crash took place, and with that amount of damage he would also have to file a police report and lie to them as well.
Bottom line is, if you are on track you are 100% responsible for any damage you may incur. At some events you may be able to purchase separate declared value track day insurance for a fee.
