After that I'm not sure. If you have any active electronics running between the amp and the head unit I would suspect that.
Is your H/U running the power/speaker outputs into the amplifier instead of the low level preamps?

Is the H/U switching to AM/FM during this time?
The volume knob does not affect the static or white noise, I assume that's why it can be heard through the music at low volume.

I'll have to look into the other things.

I'm not sure how it was hooked up it was done at a local shop, but I've taken 4 or 5 cars to them over the years and never had any issues.
