Yep, my experience was that they're necessary and I only went down .9" in the front and .75" in the back. Went through a set of tires fairly quickly so I installed front uppers and camber arms out back.
The newer SPC forged upper control arms are a decent deal if you don't want to go all-out on a set of SPL's or Voodoo arms. Super easy to adjust and they feature a full range of motion with no increase in NVH.
I've had mine on for at least six months and they've held their adjustments being daily driven over less than ideal pavement. Go with SPL in the rear as the price difference is negligible.
