It's a matter of surface area. If the 2 filters have as much, or more, surface area, you should be fine.
The other issue would be whether there is enough room to put 2 filters in that space.
Honestly, I can't see a mfr building a cold air system with the filter as the limiting factor for air flow. I don't think you would see any hp gains with the change to 2 filters.
