2015 Sport Tech experience
Hello from a new owner. Rolling a mag black sport tech for a couple days now. I spent a lot of time reading review posts and comparing various articles. I got a few comments to share for the next potential Z owner wanting to know what its like to drive a Z. I'll start with the "Cons" since a few are often repeated.
Road Noise - Its true the Z captures road noise. However its more of your past experience and sensitivity to such things that will determine if this is a mere observation or annoyance. For me the noise of the Z is an observation. I typically switch between a 328i and Ford ranger and the Z surprisingly close to the BM, unless the road in poor condition. If roads conditions are poor then yes you hear it. However most noises still allow for conversation and does not induce fatigue. Note from test drives of a 2017 touring, 2014 touring+sport and the current 2015 sport tech the 2014 seemed louder. Your mileage will vary...
Blind spot - Also true *but* not to the extent its sometimes described. The key; adjust your mirrors properly. The Z back end is short; with mirrors adjusted properly vehicles approaching the rear will seamlessly transition from the back glass, to the side mirror and finally the peripheral view. There can be odd situations but so far with the backup camera and the basic look over the shoulder I have little to complain. No wide angles stickon needed for me
Power - aka the Z is slow. This one pops up from time to time but the answer is simple. Its not as fast the top dogs; but its certainly fast enough. Z move and moves quickly with a smooth, almost linear delivery. At highway the power is abundant and high speeds are easy to acquire. In my book it feels more GT than a classic power to weight sport cars
Sound - Its the weak area for me. The VQ luvs higher rpms but its not a great noise. The exhaust note good and stock is neighbor friendly, but close in on the rev limit and it becomes coarse and feel a bit frantic.
Of the pros; no surprise my favorite is the handling. The cabin feels great, materials are good and the steering input quick. Its got more presence than a brz/gt86 with its Datsun DNA, yet gets mentioned with the muscle guys due to its broad shoulders. Finally, for me the tech package a must.
Thanks to all for the reviews and help with buying decision
