I think the best way to go into a car-buying situation is to have the number you want to spend in your head. If you are happy with $500 over invoice, go in there and say that. This is what I want, and this is what I want to spend. It's easy when you think of it that way. No haggling, no negotiation. If they won't agree, leave. They'll do whatever they can to make a sale.
