Maybe try backing off the bolts all the way back to the front side of the y-pipe. Then with a friend to help align them into place, start tightening them all down in steps; similar to how you'd do a valve cover or a wheel ie all bolts to 25%, then 50%, 75% and onto the recommended torque. Coming from the Harley world, this is the way i'd do an exhaust. Helps to have lots of play so you can adjust everything before snugging it all up.
