More a European, and Canadian thing, from what I've always read.
And because your market isn't big enough to attract them over here, we lose out on most of them as well. Although we did get a few that you didn't, over the years (don't ask me to name any right now, though!).

It seems an odd market (a luxus hot hatch), but why not - if Maserati and Porsche can make an SUV, I guess it isn't any bigger stretch for Infinity to do a hatchback. The interview response was pretty non-committal, though.
I personally love hot hatches.... Benz makes em too expensive for this market. I think infiniti has the resources to make the a45 amg $7k cheaper and nicer looking.
