The resistors provide equivalent load to the standard light bulbs. It also gets warm in the process since it's trying to dissipate the power as heat. You'll risk damage to the BCM due to faulty connection or too low of load resistance (e.g., short between the terminals).

You can measure the resistance of the light bulbs using a meter, and then make sure the load resistor value is not less than the bulb resistance.
