Default Stone Guards?

Are the Nissan "splash guards" the way to go, or are there better options to protect behind the wheel wells from gravel spray?

We live on a tar&gravel road, and have lots of rural 2-lane commutes. I'd kind of like the paint on the car to not be shot-blasted in these areas.

I guess some strategic clear wrapping with 3M or Xpel might work, and be a similar price to the Nissan guards. Major wrapping is more than I'd like to spend.

As I understand it, these are only painted anyway, so the car may just look like crap with stone-chipped guards instead of stone-chipped body work. Or does their shape actually stop the spray from hitting the sides?

Any other products out there worth considering?

Thanks.
