is this necessary when you replace the csc and/or clutch?

There is a procedure when reassembling the shifter. When placing the guide plate, your supposed to put it into 6th, tighten one bolt, then put it into 5th and tighten the other bolts.

So basically your plate isn't in the right spot and it's letting your shifter go over too far then you have to pull it back a little to find the right spot.
