Bonus points if the curb can hold back a pair of sunglasses. That's the only thing I use the stock cubby for anyhow

The main thing is that tablets range from 7" to 9.7". Any tablet under 8" will have large bezels which will restrict the space that it allowed by the panel that houses this. Any tablet over 8" and you're getting into an issue with real-estate as well due to the nature of the screen size. We're all trying to retrofit a tablet we can buy off the shelf.
I've given up on the fact that I'd like to have the cubby for storage so I can have an elegant design.
