Negan and Carl at the Savior's compound is pretty much, shot for shot, using the comic as a story board and the lines are almost verbatim.
Even the "My Only Sunshine" while Negan practices his swing is from the comic.
The only major difference is that Carl was all alone (not with Jesus) when he hopped in the back of the truck to get there and he was also (seemingly) much younger.
They also dialed down how he looked with the bandages of... he kind of looks like an apple with a bite out of it in the comic ...
And Negan does show a mix of being psychotic as well as tender... he's a kind and gentle sadistic killer
Negan is a genuinely scary dude. He can show emotion, but its usually hard to predict what he'll actually do... He can smile affably, walk right up to you, smiling, and gut you without blinking.
