I am pretty much always going faster than traffic, but as I don't like to be held up myself, I do not like to hold up others. If there is traffic in the middle/right lane(s), I will often speed up so as not to hold up the car behind me and find an opening to get over and let them pass. If traffic does not allow this, then the downshift-then-accelerate-to-create-a-gap method I mentioned earlier does an excellent job (in my experience) of letting them know that you don't appreciate them tailgating without being a d!ck about it.
