Head unit is just the term for the part of the stereo system in the dash with the lights, knobs, and buttons on it. You need to be more specific about your problem I think. The stock stereo isn't the best, but it shouldn't sound "staticy" especially at low volume.
Dynamat is just crap you put behind the interior panels to block noise from outside like wind noise, exhaust noise, tires rolling on the road etc. It doesn't have anything to do with your stereo, but effectively makes it sound better by removing background noise.
Do you have this problem only with the radio, or is it on CD's as well?
Is it there when the car is not running?
This is the kind of information people would need to have any chance of figuring out what you are talking about, but it sounds like you should just take it to the dealership and get it checked out.
