Rush seating makes it sound like the first person to the plane gets the best seat lol. You get a number and board in order; the number is assigned based on when you check in or if you have status or pay extra for early automatic check-in. The earlier you are in the order, the more seating options you will have when you board. I like it much better than having to pay extra for a damn window seat on virtually every other airline now.

Thankfully don't have to pay extra for a window seat here, but they are always adding extras wherever they can so I'm sure it'll come at some point. The only time I've paid for 'upgrades' like that are in charters wher you can get say an emergency row window seat with more legroom or only two seats in that row for like $20.
I usually fly WestJet here and as long as you check-in online within 24hrs of your flight you reserve an assigned seat for no charge. If you book in advance of the 24hr window they charge you a couple bucks for it. I like it better since I don't have to get to the airport early to get a better seat - though they've been steadily shrinking over the years so better is a term to be used rather loosely.
No preferred status here so I get to ride with the rest of the sardines at the will of the airlines lol
