I was hoping to see it against the F type S, The camaro v6 &ss as well as the mustang ecoboost >. The Porsche Cayman and 911 carrera. These are cars the Z has faced while not even being a close competitor in terms of car type. So I think the BMW should be subject to the same scrutiny.
I think BMW is protecting the M2 from negative criticism.

Meh? There was a media embargo for some time then the reviews flowed fast.
The M2 has brought back a playfullness to the brand that has been lacking for some time, many reviewers attest to that, and is well reviewed.
Its also sold in a way to not cannibalize its big brother too much (notice there really are not many options for example) and that's not a bad thing per se. I do wish we got a 4 door in the US as I prefer the 4 door styling as more subdued (I own an E90 335d, quite stealth
Steering feel is subjective but panned universally on newer BMWs, the M2 seems to get it back to something fun, engine note works great vs the flat F80 sounds. Seems like they did a lot of good things with the car.
