How much does it cost to rebuild? Is it cheaper to rebuild going to a machine shop, or buying a short block (I see stage 1’s for ~$2800 online).

Buying online will be "cheaper" from the start it may seem but all the additional parts will add up quickly. If the motor is coming apart, sending the heads to a qualified machine shop is a must in my eyes (Also, make sure you find one that is familiar with the VHR as the VVEL system is very easy to screw up if they dont know what they are doing)

With the engine apart, I would replace all timing components with new (Water pump, chains, guides, tensioners, etc) Upgraded Oil Galley gaskets, and a re-freshed or Nismo Oil pump.

Do you plan to have a shop do the work? If so I would contact one you trust to get a quote on pricing.

Also remember, buying an engine online limits your support. They are not going to be able to support your purchase as well as a shop can in most cases.

If I buy a short block, is it as simple as throwing the head back on and call it a day or does the head need to be inspected by the machine shop as well?
