If you're looking at an older Wrangler I'd look at a TJ (97-06). Coils all around, has the great 4.0 inline 6. Most never leave the pavement so likely hasn't been beat on. The Sport model will come with better axles and rear ends (D44) without having to pay Rubicon prices. And there are a zillion of them around so if you did need parts they are cheap and easy to find.
I just sold my JK Unlimited before the Z. Would have bought a TJ instead of the Escape but I have just turned 3 year old twins and they are much easier to contend with in a four door instead of climbing in the back seat from the front.
The only Chrysler trans that's gave me a bit of grief was a 93 Eagle Vision TSI Auto that wouldn't quite catch D when it was cold, that was after 200k though. I've had multitudes of manual and standard Chryco trans and never had an issue otherwise. Maybe I just got lucky.
